Temporomandibular Joint Adaptations Associated With Herbst Appliance Treatment in Juvenile Rhesus Monkeys (Macaca mulatta)

چکیده
This study evaluated histologically the temporomandibular joint and posterior ramal regions in juvenile Rhesus monkeys whose mandibles had been positioned forward with a Herbst appliance. Acrylic splint Herbst appliances were bonded to the maxillary and mandibular dental arches of 20 male juvenile animals. The animals were killed at 3-, 6-, 12-, and 24-week intervals after appliance placement. Seven male juvenile Rhesus monkeys served as controls. The TMJ regions, including the posterior border of the rami, then were prepared for qualitative and quantitative histological analysis. Linear measurements were obtained by way of Bioquant microscopic equipment (Bioquant Image Analysis Corp, Nashville, TN). Structural adaptations were noted in the mandibular condyle, infratemporal fossa, and the posterior ramal border of the experimental animals in comparison to controls. Specifically, increased proliferation of the condylar cartilage was noted. These adaptations occurred primarily in the posterior and posterosuperior condylar regions. Bone deposition was noted along the anterior border of the postglenoid spine; bone resorption occurred along its posterior border. Significant bony apposition also was evident along the posterior border of the mandibular ramus during early experimental periods. No gross or microscopic pathological changes were noted in the temporomandibular joint in any of the animals. The results of this study indicate that the response of the temporomandibular joint region in the juvenile animals undergoing forced mandibular protrusion with the Herbst bite-jumping mechanism is similar to previous studies investigating the response to functional protrusion with cast occlusal splints. This study also may provide some insight into the general changes occurring microscopically in the temporomandibular joint regions of growing patients undergoing Herbst appliance therapy. Histologic analysis of temporomandibular joint adaptation to protrusive function in young adult rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).
It is generally believed that the adult temporomandibular joint is incapable of a significant adaptive response to forces produced by functional jaw orthopedics. To evaluate this view, twelve young adult female rhesus monkeys were fitted with functional protrusive appliances for periods ranging from 2 to 24 weeks. Histologic analysis of the temporomandibular joint demonstrated that six of the e...
متن کاملHistologic Changes Associated With the Herbst Appliance in Adult Rhesus Monkeys (Macaca mulatta)
Although most Class II orthopedic treatments have been recommended for use in juveniles and adolescents, orthopedic intervention with the Herbst appliance has recently been suggested for use in young adults. Previous experimental studies have suggested that the potential for adaptation in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region of the young adult, while diminished compared with that of adolesc...
متن کاملThe Expression implication of GDNF in ventral horn and associated remote cortex in rhesus monkeys with hemisected spinal cord injury
Objective(s): Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) can effectively promote axonal regeneration, limit axonal retraction, and produce a statistically significant improvement in motor recovery after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the role in primate animals with SCI is not fully cognized. Materials and Methods:18 healthy juvenile rhesuses were divided randomly into six groups, obs...
متن کاملHistological changes in the articular eminence and mandibular fossa during growth of the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta).
Unlike the mandibular condyle, the temporal component of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has been the object of relatively few investigations concerning its growth and remodeling. This report provides qualitative and quantitative documentation of microanatomical changes in the mandibular fossa and articular eminence during growth of the rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta). The thickness of the fib...
متن کاملCoronoid process elongation in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) after experimentally induced mandibular hypomobility. A cephalometric and histologic study.
The present study provided an experimental model that allowed a cephalometric and histologic analysis of craniofacial growth in monkeys with induced translatory impairment of the mandibular condyle. Cauterization was performed anterior to the joint in nine experimental rhesus monkeys, while eight animals served as control subjects. The experimental procedure produced mandibular hypomobility in ...
